Kohala Country Falls Hawaii Forest and Trail

Kohala Country Falls Hawaii Forest and Trail

With its breathtaking mountain panoramas, green valleys, pasturelands, and abundant water, the Kohala Country Falls Adventure is a fascinating way for young and old to experience Kohala's "story of water." There is a Hawaiian proverb that tells us "there is life in the rain." Rain gives us the resplendent countryside and plentiful waterfalls of Kohala. In its eternal cycle, water continues to shape a dramatic landscape of strams, valleys, and cliffs. These waters reveal the history and culture of Kohala.

The tour begins with a scenic drive of contrast and change from the dry-side resort area to the lush green country of Kohala. You will journey up the Kona/Kohala coastline over lava flows from Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains. You may be able to see spinner dolphins, or in the winter months humpback whales from the shoreline. You will pass through the quaint plantation towns of Hawi and Kapa'au.  We will stop at the historic Kohala Mule Station for one of Hawaii's most spectacular coastal views. Hang on as the real fun begins with a short, bumpy road drive in our 6WD Pinzgauer on an old cane road to the trailhead over a private ranch.

As you get out of the Pinzgauer to begin the hike you will take a step back into the early 1900's.  This is when the plantation owners began the construction of the Kohala Ditch Trail to bring much needed water to the sugar cane fields. Along the 1.5 mile loop trail you will see the tunnels blasted and carved from solid rock and walk over the aqueduct on two bridges.  You will learn the story of the effort it took to build this 40 mile irrigation system. You will also visit a former taro farming site just off the path. The trail is graced with seven beautiful waterfalls.  You can take a refreshing dip in the last pool we visit, and actually sit under a cool rainwater cascade.

Deli style lunch w/ soft drinks, juices & bottled water included.
