Volcanoes National Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is located on Hawaii Island also known as the Big Island and was established in 1916. The islands are fairly young, from less than 1 million years to nearly 6 million years as new formations continue to be formed today. The islands are located on the top of the Pacific plate which is the largest tectonic plate on earth. Due to seafloor spreading, the plate continues to expand which has directly influenced the growth of the islands.
As a United States National Park, the grounds contain two active volcanoes. Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes. Traditionally considered the sacred home of the volcano goddess Pele, native Hawaiians went to the crater to offer gifts to the goddess. In 1790, a party of warriors with women and children were caught in an unusually violent eruption. Many were killed and others left footprints in the lava that can still be seen today. The volcano became a tourist attraction in the 1840s and local businessmen ran a series of hotels at the rim. Volcano House is the only hotel or restaurant located within the borders of the National Park.
The world's largest active volcano of 10,000 cubic miles is Mauna Loa with an elevation of 13,680 feet high, 70-miles long, and 30-miles wide shield-shaped dome. Kilauea also has a shield shaped dome that is 50-miles long and 14-miles wide. Both volcanoes release more fluid and less gaseous eruptions, which produce fiery fountains and rivers of molten lava. Due to these eruptions, a volcanic landscape has resulted within the National Park.
This park which includes 323,431 acres of land provides diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the Earth's most massive active volcano. Climates range from lush tropical rain forests to the arid and barren desert. The terrain provides scientists with an understanding into the origins of the Hawaiian Islands. Continuing studies offer further insights into the processes of volcanism. For all guests, the park delivers dramatic volcanic sceneries and glimpses of rare flora and fauna. Over half of the park is designated the Hawaii Volcanoes Wilderness area and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities.
