Come aboard the Hoku Nui, a 50-foot luxury catamaran, for a fun snorkel sail along the South Kona coastline. Departing from Keauhou Bay, we'll head south until we reach Kealakekua Bay, one of the best snorkel sites in all of Hawaii. As a protected marine sanctuary, the bay is home to a spectacular coral reef and a large variety of marine life. The historic Captain Cook Monument is located here as well. Once in the water, you'll be able to enjoy snorkeling over a pristine coral reef and see colorful tropical fish and vibrant corals. Green sea turtles and Hawaiian spinner dolphins are frequently seen here as well. After an hour of snorkeling, lunch will be served on board. We'll then set sail for "Red Hill" (weather permitting), an area known for its unique underwater lava formations, including archways and lava tubes. Here you'll enjoy another hour of snorkeling.
Kealakekua Bay near the Captain Cook Monument is the primary snorkel destination, and Red Hill may be added as a second site when weather and ocean conditions allow. Guests typically receive about one hour of snorkel time at each location that is visited.
No previous snorkeling experience is required, but all snorkeling participants must be confident swimmers. The crew provides masks, fins, flotation devices, a safety briefing and in-water guidance, but non-swimmers are not permitted to enter the water.
The approximately 4.5-hour cruise includes a tropical breakfast and deli-style lunch, along with complimentary juices, tea, soft drinks and water. Beer, wine, tropical cocktails and mixed drinks are available for purchase from the onboard bar.
Captain Zodiac uses small, fast inflatable rafts that can maneuver closer to lava tubes, sea caves and rugged coastal features than many larger vessels. The ride itself is part of the adventure and offers a more intimate small-group experience on the way to Kealakekua Bay.
Yes. Snorkel equipment and instruction are included, and the crew helps beginners get comfortable before entering the water. Kealakekua Bay is known for clear water and protected reef habitat, but guests should still be comfortable swimming in the ocean.
The Zodiac ride can be fast and bumpy depending on ocean conditions, so it is not suitable for pregnant guests or anyone with neck or back injuries. The tour is open to guests age 4 and older, and passengers should be comfortable climbing aboard a small raft and handling an active ocean ride.
